Aspen can probably boast of being the USA's most famous ski resort, catapulted to fame by its legions of celebrity fans. Expect to rub shoulders with the likes of David and Victoria Beckham, Mariah Carey, Kevin Costner and Jack Nicholson. It also beats other American ski resorts into a hat with its history; the town retains a turn of the 20th Century feel, combining spectacular architecture with modern trappings.
Denver is the nearest international airport, a shade over 3 hours drive through Colorado; there is also a small airport at Aspen for private jets.
Aspen is made up of 4 mountains - on one ski ticket, and linked by free shuttle - offering 4 different ski experiences. Aspen Mountain "Ajax" is in town and the busiest, while quieter Aspen Highlands offers steeper skiing and more of-piste. Beginners and intermediates enjoy the more forgiving slopes of Buttermilk while Snowmass claims the family-friendly title.
The destination for many writers and artists over the years, Aspen's cultural scene springs to life in the summer. With camps, festivals and many other lightly educational events there is also the usual offering of mountain summer activities from hiking to ballooning.
Aspen's property market is one of the most robust. Buyers buy big - 300m2 is an average size property. Average prices are higher than in Manhatten, per m2, fuelled by more demand than supply and the American ski town often ranks in the top 20 most expensive places to buy in the USA. Prices in nearby Snowmass, a few miles down the road and sharing the same ski area, are more affordable.
