Located in the heart of Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland beneath the iconic peaks of the Eiger and Jungfraujoch, a familiar backdrop to any Bollywood fans, Grindelwald has year-round appeal for an international clientele. Grindelwald epitomises "Heidi country"; it is proud of its rich mountaineering history and the main street always buzzes with the sound of multi-lingual chatter from international visitors.

Access

Grindelwald sits happily between the international airports of Geneva and Zurich, both 2.5 hours by road, and also accessible by train.

Winter

The Jungrau mountain range is the backdrop to 220km of pistes with skiing for all levels. The Piz Gloria revolving restaurant at Schilthorn, featured in the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, dominates the mountain restaurant scene. It is a popular resort with families although access to some parts of the mountian requires taking a short train ride which can be crowded at peak times. They have recently upgraded some of the previously slow charlifts to aid movement about the slopes.

Summer

For summer visitors there are 300km of hiking trails; the attractions of the lakes around Interlaken and the waterfalls at Lauterbrunnen are also close by.

Property Market

Grindelwald’s reputation as one of the world’s oldest ski resorts, typical Swiss charm and an unbeatable range of mountain activities make it a popular choice for property purchase by families and buyers looking for an alpine base with year-round usability. Property investment by foreign buyers is tightly controlled in the Bern canton. Property purchase by non-Swiss in Grindelwald - as well as the nearby ski resorts of Murren and Wengen - is limited to properties of a specified size and market value. As a result property purchase is generally restricted to buyers within a certain budget range. Overall, ski apartments are more readily available than chalets.
