Austria’s mountains are a destination for both winter and summer. The skiing offers something for all abilities
and sensibilities and the summer scene is arguably more established than in the French Alps. Many resorts benefit from a location by the lake and near to the mountains giving easy access to year-round activities. In the winter après-ski in resorts such as St Anton and Ischgl – think dancing on tables in ski boots – is infamous.
Most of Austria’s other ski resorts have yet to reach international renown; on the flipside they offer affordable property, a family friendly environment and real alpine charm.
The Tyrol (Tirol) is probably best known for winter sports – home to St Anton, Kitzbuhel and Lech - but the province of Salzburgerland can compete with resorts such as Zell Am See, Maria Alm (part of the huge Ski Amade area), Saalbach and Schladming.
More flights are connecting with Austrian airports – or access from Zurich and Munich – and the motorway network and resort access also makes driving feasible.
